The Sussex County YMCA offers separate girls and boys competitive swim teams for ages 6 – 18 years. All swimmers must be proficient at swimming the backstroke, breast stroke, butterfly and freestyle with proper technique. Tryouts for new swimmers take place in August. The season runs from September through March with additional stroke and conditioning clinics offered in the spring and summer. Practices will concentrate on improving technique, starts and turns, endurance and speed. Dryland exercises and stretching will also be part of the training regiment.
The members of the Swordfish Swim Team have the opportunity to compete in dual meets against other YMCA teams. In addition to the YMCA League, all swimmers will be registered for USA Swimming, which includes attending additional invitationals with swimmers from all over the state of NJ not just YMCAs. Swimmers who meet qualifying times during the season will be eligible to attend NJ Junior Olympics Meets held in March.
